Visit York Racecourse Event

York Racecourse

Pam Jackson and Darren Wiseman

I was invited to a behind the scenes event by Visit York at  The York Racecourse.

This was a fabulous event taking us into areas where the public would not be allowed to go. The Weighing room, the Changing rooms and The Stewards room. We were entertained with insights and stories by William Derby Chief Executive & Clerk of the Course, James Brennan Head of Marketing and Sponsorship and Tony Lee Operations Manager.

It made me realise in particular just how lucky we are to have such a fantastic race course. Easy to see why they call it the Ascot of the North.

I also didnt realise just how many different events they hosted throughout the year all nothing to do with racing at all.

Whilst we were there Gillian Cruddas reminded members of the Scandanavian Choir Tour which is a free event in York on 26th may 2012. Fun evening of music and song from Scandinavia and England! 4 Norwegian choirs will perform as part of their weekend festival in York: Nordstrandkoret, Unn-koret, Porsgrunn Sangforening and Ostre Gausal Sangkor.

Plus for some local flavour the South Bank Singers from York and the Four Quarters Quartet from Ryedale.

Live Entertainment

York is a reknowned Hot Spot for a great night out. It is very rich in vibrant cafe bars, bars pubs, restaurants, live music venues and night clubs.

Just about every Saturday there is always something on

My most favourite free music venue to go is The Roman Bath A pub right in the heart of the city at St Sampsons Square. Live entertainment is on most days 9pm – 11.30pm. On the 1st day of every month there is a black board with a list of bands playing over the next month. The venue has several rooms and a beer garden in which you can smoke. Be warned if the band is popular then the venue can get very very crowded. I can recommend 3 bands I have watched recently.

The Black Pearls
The Dark Flowers
The Mojos

2 other Free music venues in the area are The Golden Lion and The Old White Swan Goodramgate

At the end of the evening I usually head towards Plonkers Wine bar. This is a fabulous wine bar situated opposite the Grand Opera House on Cumberland Street. Plonkers is open until 2am and from 11pm-2am a DJ plays music.

When the evening has finished Plonkers is situated right next door to Streamline taxis ideal transport to your next destination

Harrogate Flower Show well worth a visit

The Harrogate Flower Show is well worth a visit whilst visiting if you are visiting York around 26th – 29th April 2012.

Its run by the RHS and is often refered to as the Chelsea of the North.

There are gardens diplays, flowers, stalls, demonstrations, Flower arrangement competitons Cookery Demos

Harrogate is only 20 miles from York so is an easy distance to visit the show.

Do have a look around Harrogate town whilst visiting its a quaint little spa town.

York Christmas Fayre

The last weekend in November marks the start of the Christmas season in York with the yearly event ST NICHOLAS FAYRE. It is the most lovely event with heaps of festive charm and cheer. St Nicks Fayre is a famous Christmas market situated in various locations over the city with a mixture of crafts, food, homemade and local produce. People travel from miles around to visit the Fayre and complete their Christmas shopping. These are some of the images I took over the weekend.
